Authorities in the Lake State have fired and detained a police investigator for assaulting and breaking the arm of an Irolsi County prosecutor.
The incident took place on Thursday after the prosecutor asked police investigators to release a man who had been illegally detained for more than eight days for allegedly stealing guns from Mwolo County in Western Equatoria State.
Senior Legal Adviser, Head of Judicial Administration and Prosecution in Lakes State, Philemon Alphonse Ikolli, told Radio Tamazuje that Machar Makuei Chol, who was deployed to Irolsi County, was thrown to the ground and his arm was broken by the police investigator who attacked him.
“I condemn this in the strongest possible terms because a police officer who is supposed to be working under a prosecutor decided to commit this criminal act. We were just doing what the law requires,” he said.
Daniel Laat Kon, coordinator of the Community Empowerment Progressive Organisation (CEPO), told Radio Tamazuje that they had received information about the unfortunate incident.
“It’s as if the police don’t understand their job at all, because their job is to enforce the law, not break it,” he said.
Kon recommends law enforcement officers take refresher courses and familiarize themselves with the law.
Police spokesman Elijah Mabor Makuac also confirmed the incident, saying the prosecutor’s right arm was broken.
Makuak said people intervened, the prosecutor was taken to the hospital and the officer was arrested.
