VVD leader Yesilgöz also sees Marjolein Faber as a “controversial candidate” for the minister. PVV leader Wilders yesterday removed Gidi Markuszower from her position as deputy prime minister and minister of asylum and migration due to concerns that emerged during the follow-up. He then proposed Faber as the new minister.

When asked why Yesilgoz agreed to Makuzor’s candidacy despite AIVD’s warnings, the VVD leader replied: “During table discussions, concerns are expressed and discussed if necessary. Afterwards, it is up to the party leaders to consider this.” Reference refers to the research conducted before someone is appointed as a minister or state secretary.

Yesilgöz learned from Wilders last night that Wilders is now nominating Faber for the post of Minister of Asylum and Migration. This morning she expressed her concerns to Wilders and coach van Zwolle. The VVD leader pointed to past statements by Faber and doubted whether they were consistent with the office’s account.

Yesilgöz did not want to comment specifically on which statements she was referring to. Faber is considered a hardliner on asylum issues and used the word “resettlement” in 2020. She also called other MPs fake representatives.

Asked if she still had confidence in forming a government with the PVV, Yesilgoz replied: “It has to be done eventually; we have an outline agreement; people in our country are a bit tired of the process and want it to end. “We are starting to solve problems.” She advocated for a “solid team” and hoped that it would be “built more smoothly.”
