Fightful said Afa was admitted to hospital on January 12 with pneumonia and a minor heart attack.
After training with Rocky Johnson and Peter Maivia, Afa had his first fight in 1971 and then began teaming up with his brother Sika.
The two formed the band “The Wild Samoans” and signed with the WWF in the late 1970s.
In April 1980, they defeated Ivan Putski and Tito Santana to capture the first WWF Tag Team Championship.
After leaving the WWF, The Wild Samoans returned in 1983 and quickly reclaimed the tag team gold by defeating Chief Jay Strongbow and Jules Strongbow in a best-of-three match.
In his third career, which began in 1992, Afa managed The Headshrinkers, Samu and Rikishi.
Afa’s final WWF match took place in 1994, and The Wild Samoans were eventually inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007.
He and his brother are known for training wrestling heroes including Hulk Hogan, Roman Reigns and the Usos.
In June, Sika Anoa’I died at the age of 79.
The death of wrestling hero Roman Reigns’ 39-year-old Samoan-American father was announced by his nephew Jahrus.
He wrote on Instagram: “It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of former Hall of Famer Polewao Leti Sika Anoayi. He passed away peacefully on June 25th.
“Sika was a celebrated figure whose contributions and legacy left an indelible mark. He will always be remembered for his achievements and the many lives he impacted.”
Jarrus added that the wrestling pioneer was an inspiration in “many other” areas of life, including upholding family values.
