PARIS: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement from wrestling after she was disqualified before the women’s 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday for not meeting the weight requirement.

Fugate was set to compete for gold against American Sarah Hildebrandt, but the 29-year-old weighed 100 grams less than her despite fasting for a week and spending hours in the sauna to get down to her competition weight.

“Wrestling won, I lost. My dream is shattered. I have no strength left,” Phogat wrote on X.

“Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I will be forever grateful to you all. I’m sorry.”

Cuban Yusneylys Guzman Lopez replaced Phogat in the final, where Hildebrandt defeated him 3-0 to take the gold medal.
