oneThe Democratic Labour Party (DLP) plans to keep its members informed and has promised to announce a new voting date soon, party chairman Andre Worrell said.
“We will inform the members about the voting date,” he told reporters at a news conference during a break on the second day of the party’s annual congress.
The decision to suspend the voting process for the election of six general council members was made following a complaint forwarded to the Data Commissioner, which the party had not previously received.
“Yesterday, the party decided to suspend the voting process. Postpone it. We will vote for six people to go to the general council,” Worrell said.
He explained that a complaint filed last week by Theodora Corbin prompted the party to take a cautious approach:
“This issue arose because a complaint was made to the Data Commissioner. But that complaint was never sent to the party.”
He revealed that Data Commissioner Lisa Greaves had informed the party of the complaint and responded on Friday.
“So, out of an abundance of caution, we decided not to use electronic voting at that time,” the acting chairman noted. In addition, he also mentioned the timing of the vote, affirming: “We decided to postpone the vote.”
Worrell also responded to questions about the decision-making process for restricting entry, and stressed that those banned from entering the country were directly involved in sabotage.
“We can’t let members go through this,” he insisted. “Members are horrified by their actions … We want an orderly meeting where people can come.”
He added that while different opinions were welcome, they had to be expressed in an orderly manner. (RG)
