Muscat: Thursday marks World Environment Day and the Environment Agency (EA) has called on everyone to work together to protect a sustainable environment.
The Sultanate of Oman is an important turtle nesting site in the world, with more than 30,000 turtles nesting on Masirah Island every year, the most important of which are the green turtle and the Rayman 3.
Four of the world’s seven species of sea turtles nest on the beaches of Masirah Island in South Sudan.
The Sudan has several turtle conservation programmes in place, including turtle registration and numbering.
Since the 1970s, Oman’s global importance for sea turtle survival has been identified through surveys and research, including regular beach surveys on Masirah Island to record and monitor turtle population trends, nesting activity and threats to nesting turtles, implementation of initiatives to mitigate threats to sea turtle populations nesting on Masirah Island, advocacy for change at local and government levels to support sea turtle conservation, and increased education, community engagement and support for greater awareness of sea turtles across Oman.
