Tourism Association: The incident will not deter tourists

Kuala Lumpur Tourism Association president Syed Azhar Syed Nazir told CNA the city’s tourism industry had not been affected in any way, although he expected fewer visitors to the Jalan Masjid India area.

“We have not seen any cancellations on the booking platforms. It is summer vacation, which is considered the peak season. We are confident that all these bookings will materialize,” he said.

“I’m sure tourists won’t cancel their bookings because of this incident. We do have occasional incidents like landslides but this won’t put tourists off.”

Uzaidi Udanis, chairman of the Malaysian Tourism Council and Inbound Tourism Association, also said there has been no drop in bookings following the incident.

“I’m in contact with foreign counterparts every day, but there’s not a lot of discussion about this incident,” he said.

Licensed tour guide PT Hariyadurai said tourists would still go to other parts of the city.

“This zone is mainly targeted at tourists from the Indian and Indonesian markets as they can buy a lot of goods there.

“Of course, for now the region will be affected and it will take time to recover,” said Mr Hariyadurai, whose company Skyrise Travel and Tours caters mainly to the international market.

“We are discouraging customers from travelling to the area for now and are instead diverting them to other parts of the city such as Bukit Bintang.”
