DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The International Cricket Council is moving the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates, where it will be held in October.
An uprising in Bangladesh in July left more than 300 people dead.
The 10-team tournament will be held in Dubai and Sharjah from October 3 to 20, the sports governing body said on Tuesday.
ICC chief executive Jeff Allardyce said: “I would like to thank the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) team for exploring all avenues to try and get the tournament staged in Bangladesh, but travel warnings from some of the participating teams’ governments meant this was not feasible.”
He said, “It is unfortunate that we could not host the Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh,” adding, “We look forward to bringing the ICC global event to Bangladesh in the near future.”
Allardis thanked “the Emirates Cricket Council for hosting this event on behalf of the Emirates Cricket Council”.
Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe were also thanked for “their generous support”.
India had previously rejected a proposal from the International Cricket Council to replace Bangladesh as host.
