Temperature forecasts for the winter period from May to July show that average temperatures will rise across the country.
This is according to the April rainfall forecast issued by the Namibian Meteorological Service. The forecast says that average temperatures are expected to range between 12 and 19 degrees Celsius in most parts of the country, while the Ohangwena region and parts of Kunene, Omusati, Oshana, Kavango West, Kavango East and Zambezi regions are expected to average 20°C.
“While average temperatures are expected to rise, it is important to remember that reference is to average winter temperatures,” the report said.
In April, temperatures were above average across most of the country, except for the coastal areas, which were below average.
Northern areas such as Kunene, Omaheke and western Hardap were three to four degrees above average.
Khorixas and Valmkülle in the Kunene region recorded the highest temperatures of the month at 41.8°C and 40.3°C respectively.

At the same time, the bulletin pointed out that rainfall in most parts of the country in April was 90 mm or less.
Only heavier rainfall was reported in Otiwe and Okanjatu in the Ojozondjupa region, with 110 mm and 103 mm of rainfall respectively.
Looking at the October to April season, most parts of Namibia experienced a below normal rainfall season. Monthly averages for April indicate that most parts of the country received below normal rainfall.
“Parts of Kunene and Karas received average rainfall.” In addition, the report said the average maximum temperature was 31.5°C and the average minimum temperature was 16.1°C.
