Winter tire, summer tire season returns on April 15

On April 15, the validity of the decree ended, which restricted the movement of cars and commercial vehicles on many Italian roads to no more than 3.5 tons and required them to be equipped with winter tires and equivalent equipment, namely snow chains or snow socks. As in the autumn, the deadlines related to the installation of snow tires do not concern those who have chosen all-season tires, a type that is proving increasingly suitable for the needs of a large number of motorists.
Motorists forced to change winter/summer tires have until mid-May to do so, a technical time inspired by the need for proper organization of tire changes by tire dealers. It is necessary to contact whom, since most cars are now equipped with pressure sensors, which require adequate mechanical equipment and indispensable calibration of the equipment by tire dealers during tire removal and assembly.

The right tires avoid fines and reward safety

But let’s see what the law says. Without prejudice to the fact that the size of the snow tyres must correspond to one of the sizes reported in the manual (verifiable by the dimensions on the side of each tyre), the legislation makes it mandatory to fit summer tyres by mid-May, provided that: they have a lower speed code than that indicated on the registration document. In this case, from May 16th you will be subject to a fine ranging from €419.00 to €1,682.00 and you will risk having your vehicle registration document confiscated, which will require an inspection at the Department of Land Transport. Therefore, if the code is the same or higher than that indicated in the manual, it is not necessary to replace the tyres before May 15th. It must be pointed out, however, that summer tyres, due to their specific construction characteristics, overheat less than winter tyres and therefore offer greater safety and comfort parameters.
