According to the United Nations, 1.4 million people in Namibia are starving, and the country declared a state of emergency in May. As a result, the Namibian Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism authorized the killing of 723 wild animals, including elephants, zebras, hippos and antelopes. Hunting will be carried out to fight hunger in areas where the human population exceeds the capacity of the ecosystem.
The Namibian government believes that in this way they will be able to provide meat to the communities most affected by the drought. In addition, according to the authorities, these measures are intended to “reduce the suffering of animals due to poor conditions and prevent further environmental degradation.”
