While powerful politicians from Romania’s major parties lined up behind the leader to get the highest possible points in the parliamentary and presidential elections, the Soviet Union, one of the main voices of the opposition, appears to be quite divided, with Elena Rasconi being the only presidential candidate who did not receive the majority support of party leaders.

In addition to the absence of important Soviet leaders close to party chairperson Elena Raskony, many influential politicians in the organization did not even publicly promote their party’s candidate in the presidential election.

Political analyst George Jiglău believes that one reason for the situation in the Soviet Union could be the conservative attitude of Elena Lasconi.
“Ms. Rasconi’s direction of the party and the party’s image also has a lot to do with her image. There is a lot of this conservative attitude, which until now was not unique to the Soviet Union. This may not necessarily suit some Soviet leaders, so they openly support this approach, including posting messages on Facebook. It is also possible that Elena Rasconi is the kind of politician who works better alone. This is not a negative thing. It is clear that Elena Rasconi is the image of the Soviet Union in this presidential election. At the same time, each of the six current or former Soviet leaders who did not support her had their own aspirations, and each wanted to get to the top. Then maybe they did not want to associate their political image with Elena Rasconi. But I don’t think this is a breakthrough for the USR””, said George Jiglău, “Adevărul”.
However, analysts believe that as the presidential election approaches, it is not ruled out that support within the party will become more consistent.
“I think we will also see information about support from other Soviet leaders as the elections approach. At the Soviet level, there will obviously be discussions after the elections. We will see whether Elena Raskoni will be evaluated based on her scores in the presidential elections and how the USR’s scores will affect the parliamentary elections. If Elena Raskoni does not have good approval ratings, we will now see the reaction of those who did not support her””, said George Gigrao.

Analysts believe the lack of support is related to political competition.
“I don’t think the lack of support for Elena Rasconi is political misogyny. I rather think that Ms. Rasconi has a strained relationship with the former party leadership. Ms. Rasconi clearly has communication skills, but she also has problems with knowledge and political experience. It would help them a lot if they could also get the support of more experienced politicians. Misogyny existed in the Soviet Union, but it is already a common feature of Romanian politics”says Cristian Pîrvulescu in Adevărul.
“Political competition is a normal thing and it is part of this explanation. Of course, the former Soviet leaders may show some additional solidarity, which is generated by a lack of confidence in Elena Lasconi’s abilities. Or it may be that the new leader Elena Lasconi failed to succeed due to the motivation of the former leaders, which is a sad reality.” Say this.
Elena Rasconi’s team won a third of the seats in the USSR leadership in the elections held at the end of June 2024. The rival group “USR Ebilibru”, which brought together leaders such as Dominic Fritz, Vlad Voiculescu, Clotilde Armand and Allen Coliban, won seven seats in the party leadership.
