Marcelo Brozovic has ended his career with the Croatian national team. The midfielder himself wrote a long post on social networks, explaining that despite being 31 years old, he has made the decision to retire.
After being criticised for his poor performance at the European Championship, the midfielder for Saudi Arabia’s Al Nasr decided to end his career with the number 99. And he played the game.
Brozovic’s message
“You know me well and know that I am not a man of many words, so in fact this farewell letter only needs one number: 99. I have had the honor to play for the Croatian national team many times and with this number I will end my career with the national team.
I have always given Croatia the utmost commitment, energy, strength and passion. This is the standard set by many great players before me, the standard we all strive for in this unforgettable generation and the standard all those who come after will strive for. I feel that I have faced and achieved everything I wanted in Croatia and now it is time to bring in new forces who give 100% because that is the only thing that matters.
99 games. They contain the most important memories of my football career and I am very grateful to have had the honor of being part of this team. Thank you to all the coaches, all the staff and the Federation team because everyone contributed to creating a winning atmosphere.
I’m very grateful to my family for their continued support and I’m happy to share these moments with them and the fans.
It’s hard to say goodbye to the national team and to my teammates. It’s hard to say goodbye to Luka and Kovač, we’ve been through a lot and it was an incredible pleasure to play with them. For the others, because we know how to give 100% on the field. I know how much I will miss everything: every meal, the nerves before the game, the pride of the game, the excitement of celebrating big wins with the fans, and the usual Mondays when we would get together, hug each other and receive news about the game. We left it off last time.
But the show must go on and those of us who are leaving are still the biggest fans. Croatia has and will continue to have a great team. 99. Some might ask, “Who is crazy enough to say goodbye after 99 games?” It was more than I could have asked for and better than I could have dreamed. That’s why those 99 games were epic!
