WASHINGTON — Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo made progress despite clashes between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, the White House said Monday, and working-level negotiations were expected to continue for several days.
“Negotiations continue to make progress and our teams on the ground continue to view the negotiations as constructive,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.
“So despite the rocket and drone attacks by Hezbollah last weekend, which Israel defended brilliantly against, that did not detract from the actual work that the parties were doing to reach a ceasefire agreement,” Kirby said.

Despite repeated disagreements between Israel and Hamas, the United States has repeatedly expressed optimism about negotiating a ceasefire proposed by President Biden in the more than 10-month-old conflict.
Kirby said senior White House official Brett McGurk stayed in Cairo for an extra day to hold further low-level talks.
“He may leave soon and leave the discussion and the work to the task force members,” Kirby said.

“We would expect these working group discussions to continue at least over the next few days, but whether they continue longer, or potentially wrap up sooner, I think is really going to depend on the people who are present,” he said.
