Kasčiūnas told reporters at the meeting of European Union (EU) defense ministers in Brussels before the start of Friday.
“If necessary, I would grab (such a portfolio – ELTA). “But of course there is development, there are other things. But, I think, Andri Kubilius can do a lot”, he added.
ELTA reminds everyone that last Thursday, the head of state signed the decree proposed by the government approving the candidacy of A. Kubilius for the post of EU Commissioner.
In its special session next week, Congress should decide on A. Kubilius’ EC candidacy.
Earlier, in the public sphere, the main discussion was about the possibility of Foreign Minister Gabrielias Landsbergis becoming an EU Commissioner. However, he told Erta that he had received information that the President would not approve his candidacy. G. Landsbergis made it clear that a previous conflict with the President – the so-called “Phantom of the Opera” scandal – could also have influenced this.
The presidential palace not only refuted the foreign minister’s accusation, but also stressed that Nauseda “saved” the conservative leader from “terrible humiliation.” Frederiks Jansons, the president’s chief adviser, said it was almost obvious that not only the opposition but also the ruling party did not want to support Landsberg, who applied for the position of EU commissioner.
Nominations for EU commissioners are submitted by the government with the agreement of the president and parliament.
