Muscat: Speeding, overtaking and bad behaviour were the main causes of road accidents in 2023, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
In 2023, speeding caused 1,009 traffic accidents, resulting in 304 deaths, down from 334 in 2022 and 233 in 2021. It also caused 1,037 injuries.
The number of road accidents increased to 1,009 in 2023 from 988 in 2022 and 820 in 2021.
In 2023, traffic accidents caused a total of 595 deaths, including 103 deaths due to negligence, 48 deaths due to overtaking, 35 deaths due to failure to maintain a safe distance, and 80 deaths due to bad behavior.
At the same time, 245 people were injured due to speeding, 98 people were injured due to overtaking, 160 people were injured due to failure to maintain a safe distance, and 418 people were injured due to bad behavior.
Weather conditions caused 19 accidents, resulting in four deaths and 20 injuries.
There were 41 drunk driving accidents, resulting in 4 deaths and 30 injuries.
In 137 accidents, 160 people were injured due to failure to maintain a safe distance.
Interestingly, bad behavior caused 80 deaths and 418 injuries in 373 accidents, up from 63 deaths and 433 injuries in 355 accidents in 2022, and up from 54 deaths and 355 injuries in 282 accidents in 2021.
Vehicle defects caused 56 accidents, resulting in 9 deaths and 72 injuries.
It is noteworthy that insurance companies paid 74,710,224 claims (vehicle insurance) in 2023, compared to 33,138,788 in 2022 and 44,189,364 in 2021.
