This afternoon, a woman claiming to be the man’s sister posted on Facebook that he was walking home from a family event when he was hit.

“No matter what he does or what he’s wearing, if you hit someone you stay until help comes,” the post read.

“Police say someone did stay with him and followed him to the hospital.”

The woman thanked those who stayed by her brother’s side regardless of whether they hit him or not, and did not let him get cold.

“To the rest of you who left my brother there, I hope you get the punishment you deserve,” she said.

The woman also thanked the medical staff and police for delivering the news to her family and staying with them until they recovered.

“To the nurses and doctors who stabilized the patient. To the nurses who flew with him, thank you for caring for him so diligently even though you were all tired.

“Thank you so much for allowing my brother, me and my family to continue breathing. Thank you very much. ”

The injured man remains in hospital in critical condition.

The Serious Accident Investigation Team has been involved and is investigating the specific circumstances.

“We would like to hear from anyone who was on or near White Pine Bush Rd at the time of the incident who may have information relevant to this case,” police said.

Police urge anyone with information to call 105 and quote file number 240818/1806.

A Hato Hone St John spokesman said they were notified of a motor vehicle accident on White Pine Bush Rd at 12.17am and immediately dispatched two ambulances and a rapid response team to the scene.

“Our staff assessed and treated a patient in a critical condition and transported him to Whakatane Hospital.”
