Doctor Adrian Marinescu, director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases “Matebarche” in the capital, explained on Sunday on the Antena 3 program the symptoms of infection with the West Nile virus and who is susceptible to severe infection.
The National Institute of Public Health reports that this year Romania has had 22 cases of West Nile virus infection, including one death. “West Nile virus infection is no longer an exotic disease, we have cases of it every warm season in Europe and in Romania. The important thing is that most of the time, the symptoms are either mild or absent. Those complex forms that we see, such as encephalitis, meningoencephalitis, are rare cases that ultimately cannot be diagnosed. This means that most of the time we have underdiagnosis, that is, there are many patients who are not tested, they do not know that they have the virus, for them it is like a common cold and the matter goes on.” Doctor Adrian Marinescu. “Usually, the people who develop complications are people over 65 years old with chronic diseases. In their case, there is usually a risk of adverse developments. Anyone can be infected, after all, it has nothing to do with age, but with the way we get infected. Usually you don’t have any symptoms at all, and most of them look exactly like a cold. But if you reach a serious level, it’s better to say here what symptoms should make me go to the hospital as soon as possible. When you have a high fever, an uncontrollable headache, vomiting, a sudden change in your general condition, the light bothers me, then I should go to the nearest hospital unit. We should be more cautious in the hot season”, added Marinescu.
