West Indies all-rounders Andre Russell and Jason Holder will be rested for the three-match Twenty20 home series against South Africa this month, the West Indies cricket governing body (CWI) said on Sunday.

Medium-paced bowler Matthew Forde and all-rounder Fabian Allen, who missed the T20 World Cup co-hosted by the West Indies in June, have returned to the team.

“Andre Russell has requested some time off to recover, as has Jason Holder, who has played five consecutive Tests against England and South Africa,” CWI director of cricket Miles Bascombe said in a statement.

“They will be working closely with the CWI scientific and medical teams during this time.”

Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph is out of the series against South Africa this month due to injury, so both he and injured opening batsman Brandon King were not included in the 15-man squad.

“I am confident in the squad we have selected and with our sights set on the next T20 World Cup in 2026, I know these players will be eager to show their hunger for success,” said head coach Darren Sammy.

The series will be held on August 23, August 25 and August 27 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago.

West Indies squad:

Rovman Powell (captain), Roston Chase, Arik Atanaz, Johnson Charles, Matthew Ford, Shimron Heitmeier, Fabian Allen, Shay Hope, Akeel Hussain, Shamal Joseph, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Moti, Nicholas Pooran, Shelfin Rutherford, Romario Sheppard.
