(CWI) St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda – The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) filed a case in the Guyana High Court challenging the election of Mr. Azim Basarat as Vice President of the West Indies Cricket Association and the Court this morning ruled in favour of the GCB.
The defendants in the case are West Indies Cricket Corporation, Mr. Basarat and the Returning Director, Mr. Gregory Nicholls, who are all named as defendants in the case. The defendants, through their counsel, argued that the court had no jurisdiction to hear the case and that such disputes should be resolved through arbitration. Instead, the court ruled that it had jurisdiction and granted the order sought by the GCB.
The defendant disagrees with the court’s decision. Therefore, CWI has instructed its legal team to immediately file an appeal and await the decision of the Court of Appeal.
Mr Basarat was elected Vice President of CWI at the 24th Annual General Meeting held in Antigua on March 25, 2023. Mr Basarat was unopposed and received six votes, two against and four abstentions.
