– President Ali says government has overcome lost time and challenges to build Guyana
Recalling the significant progress Guyana has made in development and transformation, President Dr. Irfaan Ali said his government had to overcome lost time and many challenges to be on the path to building a strong and resilient economy.
The head of state made the remarks while delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the recently concluded International Construction Expo.
President Ali noted that it was important and necessary to reflect on some things in life, while saying that all that had been achieved over the past four years was the result of the hard work of so many Guyanese.
“When you say four years, we didn’t have the full four years. As you know, in the last four years, we almost completely lost one year due to COVID. We lost more than six months due to two floods; we also lost time due to a widespread and prolonged dry season,” the President said.
In addition, he noted, time was lost due to what was happening in the international supply chain.
They also have to deal with an international environment that includes rising inflation, higher costs for goods, services and even transportation, and higher energy costs, he said.
From one crisis to another, from the global pandemic, the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East to the drying up of the Panama Canal, he said, we must meet all of these challenges head on.
“So, actually, we did put in two years of solid work and all these achievements that we have today are the result of two years of hard work, part of which was wasted due to things that were beyond our control,” he said.
He noted that this reflected the scale and extent of the efforts and commitment to addressing global issues.
The government has done this while overcoming all of these challenges, with inflation being contained to low single digits and the cost of living being the best in the region thanks to specific government policy measures to mitigate the impact of rising international costs.
He added: “I don’t think there is any policy framework indicator that takes into account national development and resilience to global shocks more comprehensively than the one we have developed.”
Looking ahead, President Ali said efforts are continuing to identify what can be done better, what policies can be strengthened in response to some of the challenges that still exist, and to address challenges that will be faced in the near and medium term.
“We are already thinking about how to mitigate some of these challenges in the medium term and how to deliver the most modern, most transformative Guyana for the Guyanese people by 2030, because the path to that development, the path to transformation, the dream that you have dreamed of, is now well underway and we are on the path to building one of the strongest, most sustainable, most resilient economies in the world,” the President affirmed.
