Virginia Tech was a potential ACC title contender at the start of the 2024 season. It may still have a chance to win once it actually gets to the conference. But its season got off to a rocky start, and it suffered one of the biggest upsets of the season on Saturday, ultimately losing.
Although Virginia Tech was favored by two touchdowns in Saturday’s game, it lost to the Vanderbilt Commodores 34-27 in overtime.
Worse still, they might get lucky and even send the game into overtime with a chance to win.
Vanderbilt led 17-0 in the first half before Virginia Tech finally began to show some life and claw its way back into the game. It even took the lead late in the fourth quarter but was unable to stop Commodores quarterback Diego Pavia on the ensuing drive.
Pavia didn’t throw the ball a ton Saturday, but he was efficient when he did, completing 12 of 16 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
He also caused trouble for Virginia Tech on the ground, gaining 104 yards on 26 carries and scoring a touchdown in overtime to help his team win.
