Two hikers encountered some four-legged company while hiking in Finland’s Far North.

While hiking in northwestern Lapland on Thursday, Wait, Yudila and Maya Helistin They met some amazing company. A reindeer decided to join them and walked about 20 km from Pyhäkero to Pahakuru.

As the two were hiking along the Hetta-Pallastunturi trail, a reindeer joined them near a cafe in Pyhäkero.

Ever since Judila shared the video of the unexpected encounter on social media, she has attracted widespread attention.

“The cafe owner told us there was a friendly reindeer in the area and asked if we had seen it,” Helisten told Yle.

It turned out that the reindeer had been following them from the cafe. The reindeer, named “Pena” by friends, either walked ahead of the hikers or alongside them until they reached the campsite in Pahakulu.

“It sleeps outside our wilderness cabin… and in the morning it goes on its way,” Judila explained.

The hikers said they had never experienced anything like it and told Yle they were initially very apprehensive about the reindeer, especially because of its large antlers.

The women said they did not feed or touch the reindeer.

“Even though he was friendly, we all considered him a wild animal,” Jutila said, adding that they were eager to learn more about the animal and his owner.
