Walmart recalls apple juice due to high arsenic levels

WASHINGTON (LPL/AP) – Walmart is recalling nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold in stores across the U.S. because they contain potentially harmful levels of inorganic arsenic.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday gave the recall a more urgent rating after initially issuing an advisory on Aug. 15. The new classification states that the affected products may temporarily cause adverse health consequences but are unlikely to cause serious or irreversible medical problems.

The recall involves 9,535 cases of Great Value brand apple juice sold in 25 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Florida-based manufacturer Refresco Beverages US voluntarily recalled six tainted 8-ounce bottles of juice after discovering levels of a chemical contaminant that exceeded industry standards.

A Refresco spokesperson did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on Sunday.

“The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority,” Walmart spokeswoman Molly Blackman said in a statement. “We have removed the product from the affected stores and are working with our supplier to investigate.”
