It’s been two months since New Caledonia entered another life. Today, the entire island is in ruins. Ten people have died since the abuse began, and much of the population now lives in fear.
Since May 13, everything has changed. Life has never been the same in many communities. Residents are on constant alert, preparing for the worst, protecting their property, their businesses, their streets. This insecurity has lasted for nine weeks, no department has been immune, and the abuses continue, especially in Mondor.
8,000 students were affected by the partial or total destruction of educational institutions. From Kaméré to Logicoop via Païta and Dumbéa, few communities or cities have been spared. Today, hundreds of children are trying their best to maintain their educational continuity or are placed in other kindergartens, primary schools, middle schools or high schools.
Damages nationwide now stand at 265 billion francs, of which 165 billion francs were in the private sector. 767 businesses were burned and/or destroyed.
The three nickel plants, already significantly weakened before the unrest, are now in dire straits. Prony Resources has put 1,300 employees on partial unemployment. Koniambo Nickel, which is still waiting for a buyer and whose operations are particularly dependent on ore supplies from Népoui, has a damaged loading conveyor.
The structural deficits of all health institutions are worsening. Social security contributions are falling, medical assistance structures are being adjusted, nursing staff are in short supply, and care for dialysis patients is being interrupted. Difficulties are piling up.
It is against the backdrop of this acute crisis that the National Assembly was dissolved. The bill leading to the organization of legislative elections was passed. The assessment? Thanks to the intense mobilization of the population, New Caledonia elected a loyal representative and a pro-independence representative.
