After weeks of standoffs between police and protesters at roadblocks, traffic in Poya appears to be calm and flowing again. It is a victory that dialogue has been reestablished and motorists can once again travel freely on a stretch of road that is vital to the economy and functioning of the northern province.

A barrier-free territorial road, this was the vision RT1 offered in Pøya on Monday morning. The impressive Nekö Dam (the town’s language name) resisted for weeks as the police ruthlessly cleared the road. It was dismantled and immediately rebuilt every day.

At the beginning of July 22 this year, there were still some light structures installed on private properties. Sparse but solid. You would need the help of a chainsaw to destroy them and a couple of dump trucks to evacuate them.

I think our determination brought people back to reason and to the negotiating table.

Colonel de l’Estang du Rusquec, Commander of the Mobile Gendarmerie of Nimes

Poia is an important crossroads and meeting point between the two departments of Grande-Terre. The mandatory passage zone is essential for the economic functioning of the North and it will continue to be monitored to ensure a sustainable situation in the medium term.

We will continue to clean up and release the axis relentlessly. Today, we realize that there has been a trend toward more dialogue and perhaps other ways of protest, which is a good thing.

Frédéric Bouteille, Commissioner of the Republic’s Delegate in the North Department

After dismantling the roadblocks in Boulay and Poa, the next step for the police is to dismantle those in Vau and Kalagogmen, the last bastions of resistance on the west coast.

On July 22, 2024, the huts on the edge of Poya Dam were demolished.
