Here is the little I know about the Vidas family history. My great grandfather and his brother came to the US in the early 20th century from Croatia when Croatia was part of Austria (I think around 1912 – I’ll check later). His wife came later. Frank Vidas – Brother Anton Vidas – Great grandfather born June 12, 1884, died October 1965 – his father was Franjo Vidas. Marija Vidas – Great grandmother. Her father was Nate Kanjer. I can’t tell from their baptismal records what all their names are, and the records aren’t in English. I don’t know if the Vidas family came from there. But this is a story my grandfather told me. I don’t know how much truth there is in this story. He said the Vidas family were pirates who landed on the island of Krk and then moved inland. My father said they were fishermen. Who knows. But later they became farmers. My grandfather gave me the 1948 census statistics for the Vidas family in Croatia (he visited the family 7 times). Fuzine, Delmice (?) – 1 family (5 people) Hreljin, Rijeka – 39 families (116 people) Novalja, Rab – 53 families (257 people) Svpetarska Draga, Rab – 24 families (128 people) Turanj, Zadaz – 8 families (40 people) + others Vid = vision – to see – to stand out. Vidin, Vidovich, Vidas are from the same root. Vidin and Vidovich have a family crest.
