La Vega.- Deputy Mayor of La Vega, Amparo Custodio announced his resignation despite the recent appointment of Mayor Kelvin Cruz The new Minister of Sports.
According to the rules, Amparo was the candidate to fill the mayoral vacancy given Cruz’s appointment. However, the vice mayor decided to resign from the position for reasons that went beyond legality.
Custodio, who was elected in a coalition agreement led by the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), said that although she had the necessary skills to take on The function of the mayor is that the PRM should nominate a candidate representing the ruling party.
“This position belongs to the party,” she told a news conference, suggesting that the decision not to take the mayor’s post could also be seen as an act of loyalty to the political organization that brought her to the deputy mayor’s office.
“Whether directly or indirectly, I deprive the Pere Mesta or La Vega municipalities of the legal position they have chosen. These are enough to exclude me from the possibility of succeeding Kelvin Cruz in the mayor’s office. Therefore, I formally and unconditionally resign as vice mayor, leaving it to the institutions to decide who will hold the mayor’s office and the vice mayor’s office from now on,” Amparo Custodio said in the letter.
Here is the letter
Regarding Mayor Kelvin Cruz’s recent resignation as Sports Secretary, I would like to publicly make the following statement:
As a result of this resignation, I am legally obligated to assume my duties as Mayor of La Vega. However, I want to make clear my position on this matter.
The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) nominated Kelvin Cruz as its mayoral candidate, and it was he who had the support of the voters of La Vega. My candidacy for deputy mayor was part of the electoral formula, and my support for Kelvin Cruz was based on his previous administration, which I have always considered to be ethical and exemplary.
It is important to emphasize that voters specifically voted for Kelvin Cruz to run for Mayor and for me to be his running mate for Vice Mayor. I am not a candidate for any other office in the state, and I would probably not have accepted that candidacy if someone else had run.
The PRM voters elected one of their own to lead the Mayor’s office, and I must be clear: I have never been a member of the PRM and have no plans to do so in the future.
During my tenure as Deputy Mayor, I have fully performed my duties and have been recognized by the citizens. I respect the trust placed in me by the voters and Kelvin Cruz. I chose this position based on my extensive career as a member of the Dominican Teachers Association (ADP) union, a pre-university and university educator, and a municipal official who is committed both in theory and practice.
These achievements are not accidental, but the result of more than three decades of hard work and dedication. I was elected as a City Councillor from 1998 to 2002 and had the privilege of chairing the Board of Aldermen during that period, and my stewardship was recognised locally and internationally. I served in a variety of executive roles, including implementing the City’s participatory budget, community engagement, and directing the City’s Children’s Summer Olympics, which benefited thousands of vegan boys and girls.
My entry into the Deputy Mayor’s office was not accidental, but rather the result of my persistent work and commitment to the community.
It is my understanding that, given the resignation of Kelvin Cruz, I am authorized by law to assume the office of Mayor. However, I believe the legality of my holding this position is questionable.
For me, legal stuff is important.
I would like to deprive the municipalities of Pere Mesta or La Vega, directly or indirectly, of the position they have chosen and which legally corresponds to them.
These are enough for me to rule out the possibility of succeeding Kelvin Cruz in the mayor’s office.
Therefore, I formally and unconditionally resign from the position of Deputy Mayor, and the operation of the institution will determine who will hold the office of the Mayor and the office of the Deputy Mayor in the future.
