In the lush valleys of Veneto and the historic cities of Friuli Venezia Giulia there are real architectural gems: residences, many of them Palladian, that not only showcase the splendor of Italian art, but also contain stories of bygone times and fascinating family secrets and traditions spanning centuries. In a region rich in UNESCO heritage, such as the Prosecco hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, Palladio’s villas, cities such as Verona and Venice, there exists a little-known and still underappreciated heritage, but one that has great potential in the region both from a cultural and economic development point of view.
According to the latest census‘Institute for the Study of the Villas of Venice (IRVV) The heritage consists of 4,000 buildings, of which 3,807 are located in Veneto and 436 in Friuli, of which 15% are publicly owned and the remaining 85% are privately owned. The IRVV, established by Regional Law n. 63 of 1979, is tasked with cataloguing, restoration and valuation through the publication of studies, analysis and support activities, and the provision of public funds. The recently updated Regional Law has endowed the IRVV with new skills, such as the value of the collections preserved in the villas, educational activities aimed at new generations, carried out in partnership with schools and universities. Finally, the most difficult task concerns the tourist promotion of the entire villa and residential complex, which in itself is a very fragmented whole, not accustomed to forming a system. The goal is to promote an overall project that strengthens cultural services combined with sustainable tourism through art, culture, the production of wine and quality agricultural products. To carry out the assigned tasks, the IRVV has an annual budget of approximately 3.6 million euros until 2024, with an increase of 500,000 euros in the 2024 budget, of which a contribution from the PNRR Fund is used to remove architectural obstacles in Villa Pojana, in the province of Vicenza. Overall, the amount paid by the Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia Regions is 850,000 euros. The total budget of 4.05 million euros is divided into 43% for recurrent expenses (personnel, governance bodies, operations and promotion), 20% for capital expenditures (works and renovations) and 38% for mortgages. Regarding the last one, at the end of 2023, a tender for mortgages and donations for the restoration of the villa was published. However, the ranking of the donation winners has not yet been published on the IRVV website.

The institute andVenice Villa AssociationFunctioning since 1979, the organization’s goal is to preserve and support its more than 400 members and a total of 1,100 villas, also taking into account non-members. The Association organizes cultural events, educational activities in schools and open days in collaboration with the FAI, and promotes agriculture through preference for vineyards, ancient crops such as wheat and a number of educational farms to promote local excellence. Among the initiatives carried out, the jewel in the crown is the “Sorsi d’Autore” initiative, which reaches its 25th edition in 2024 and was created by the AIDA ETS Foundation with the aim of bringing together art, literature, music and food with wine culture. This year’s event hosted more than a thousand art and wine lovers.
