Venice, with a population of about 250,000, receives millions of tourists each year and has generated significant revenue during the trial phase of daily tickets.
While the canals of Venice, Italy’s historic district make the city one of the most visited places in Europe, the tourist interest has had a negative impact on the city and its residents. That’s why Venice introduced a €5 daily entrance fee earlier this year after banning cruise ships from docking for the first time in 2021.
This practice started on April 25. People who enter the city but do not stay in the city between 8.30 and 16.00 will have to pay a fee. Children under 14 years old, local residents, or people who work or teach in the city are exempt from this restriction.
Since people staying in the hotel have already paid the tourism tax, they are not included in this application.
After the pilot application ended, about 440,000 people reportedly entered the city every day, generating revenue of 2.2 million euros (about 79.2 million liras).
