Between 1 and 5 June 2024, Timor-Leste hosted a visit from a Vatican team to assess the ongoing preparations for the visit of Pope Francis to Timor-Leste. This Pontifical Visit, which will take place from 9 to 11 September 2024, is eagerly anticipated and a historic moment for our country.
During the visit, the Holy See team met with the national government team and visited the venues where the Pope will attend, witnessing with appreciation the progress and quality of the preparations, which are currently 60% to 70% complete.
Ahead of the papal visit in September, the Vatican team will return to Timor-Leste in July and August to continue assessing preparations for the visit.
The motto chosen by the Pope for his visit is “May your faith be your culture,” which is “an exhortation and encouragement to live in harmony between faith and culture, in accordance with the traditions of the Timorese people.”
Last April, after the official announcement of the visit, Minister Tomás do Rosario Cabral, deputy general coordinator of the high-level body responsible for papal visits, said that “we await with great anticipation and enthusiasm the arrival of Pope Francis” and hoped that “this Apostolic Visit will be a moment of blessing and spiritual renewal for all Timorese, which will inspire each of us to continue building a society based on the values of peace, solidarity and fraternity”.
