Amid the green hills and meadows of central Bosnia, a local businessman has realized his long-cherished dream: recreating one of Vincent van Gogh’s most famous paintings, The Starry Night, in the form of a nature park.
Twenty years ago, Halim Zukic of the town of Visoko decided to build a park after buying some land and a hut in a nearby village, but he had no idea what it should look like.
Six years ago, while standing on a hill observing tractors on a hay meadow, he noticed the spiraling wheel tracks left on the ground, which reminded him of the swirling patterns in Van Gogh’s 1889 painting.
“From that moment on, I had no more doubts,” Zukic said. But his vision would take time, money and hard work to achieve.
Zukic wanted to incorporate the 10-hectare Starry Night Park into a larger complex to provide a place for visitors to relax. He planted more trees and created 13 lakes using existing natural streams.
To match the painting, 130,000 lavender plants in six different shades, along with other medicinal and aromatic herbs such as sage, echinacea, wormwood and chamomile, were planted to form colorful circles, spirals and natural amphitheaters.
Zukic, who did all of the landscaping himself, said recreating the painting taught him about the artists and the challenges they faced creating their work.
He said: “This is the biggest representative work of “Starry Night” and the result of my 20-year dream. I turned my dream into reality.”
Zukic said the Starry Night Park will focus on art projects and promoting the cultural heritage of central Bosnia. -Reuters
