Just days after UTM party secretary general Patricia Kaliati and party publicist Felix Njawala announced the proposed date for the congress, some supporters have implored Malawi’s renowned ICT engineer Dr Matthews Mtumbuka to run for president.

Supporters claim that Mtombuka is the most suitable person to succeed the party to power after the late Vice President Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima died in a plane crash on June 10, 2024.
We have not been able to independently confirm whether the ICT expert accepted the request, but some leaflets we have seen suggest he will take part in the fight.
Interestingly, his vision and agenda for the country seem to be in line with SKC’s line.
One of the leaflets praised Dr Matthews Mtumbuka as a man known for his honesty and ethical conduct, who made decisions with the national interest as priority.
“Visionary Leadership: He has a clear vision for the country’s future, focusing on long-term growth and development. Results Focused: Dr Mtumbuka has achieved significant results in previous positions, demonstrating his ability to deliver on his promises,” the leaflet we have seen reads in part.
The leaflet adds that Dr Mtombuka stood for equal opportunities and justice for all citizens while ensuring that everyone’s voice was heard and valued.
He also stressed government transparency, promoting accountability and open communication with the public.
In another leaflet, Dr. Mathews Mtumuka promised that if elected state president in the 2025 general election, his administration would work to empower local farmers through tools, training, financial support and advance mechanization and industrialization, ensuring equitable access to markets and services to increase productivity and improve livelihoods.
