Members of the UTM party are divided over how they want to work in parliament once it begins. Some say they do not want to be part of the government, while others insist they will not leave it.

Leader of the House of Representatives, Chrissie Kanyasho, said they would write to House Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara to inform them of their decision.
“We have written a letter which will be sent to the Speaker so that he will find it on his desk tomorrow,” Mr Kanyasau said.
Kanyasho said five UTM MPs, namely Steve Mikaya from Blantyre West, Simon Salambula from Ntcheu West, Felix Kayira from Karonga North West and Chrispin Mphande from Nkhata Bay West, wanted to be part of the opposition.
They also said some MPs who won as independents and then joined UTM, six of them, said they no longer wanted to be part of the government.
But we heard that some MPs who won themselves and joined UTM refused to leave the government.
One of the councillors, Biswick Million of Zomba Changalume, insisted that he would not leave the government side.
Mr Kanyasho said those who were still in government should return the party cars because then they were no longer working with UTM.
“Our party has left the coalition, so we will also leave the government side in parliament,” Mr Kanyasau said.
Council officials have yet to comment on the matter.
