The University of the South Pacific (USP) has concluded a four-day workshop from June 25 to 28 as part of the United Nations Development Programme-funded Digital Democratic Governance Initiative (PDGI). The workshop, held at the USP Tonga campus, aimed to strengthen digital governance in Tonga by training officials from various government departments.
Luke Lusting-Bruce, Governance Officer at the United Nations Development Programme, stressed the importance of the initiative. He said: “Digital democracy empowers citizens and promotes transparent governance.”
Professor Sushil Kumar, Director of Research at the University of the South Pacific, discussed the transformative potential of digitalisation. “IT tools can streamline processes and enhance service delivery,” he said, highlighting opportunities for Tonga in e-government and e-participation.
Dr Robin Havea, Director of the University of the South Pacific Tonga Campus, stressed the importance of the workshop to the local community. “The strategies developed will enable Tongan institutions to achieve more transparent and efficient governance,” he said.
The workshop presented regional and global best practices and laid the foundation for future digital initiatives aimed at promoting inclusive, responsive and accountable governance in Tonga.
