Using chlorinated water reduces the chances of children developing anemia by 9.6%. One of the contributing factors is the lack of safe water, which can create parasites in children and impair their ability to absorb nutrients.
In Peru, 5 in 10 children in rural areas and 3 in 10 in urban areas suffer from anemia. Parasites cause iron and protein loss, a condition that leads to anemia and chronic malnutrition. As a result, children suffer from low energy, poor concentration, and excessive sleep, which is detrimental to their health and development.
Therefore, it is imperative that water in urban and rural areas across the country contain adequate levels of chlorine.
2024 FIL Lima Book Launch
These statistics and others are included in the book “El bien dato Sunass” (Volume 2), which was presented at the Lima International Book Fair (FIL LIMA) 2024. The launch was attended by former Education Ministers Marilú Martens and Ricardo Cuenca, and the Executive President of the Institution, Mauro Gutiérrez.
With illustrations and simple text, the book presents the results of more than 100 studies in Peru and around the world on the impact of access to drinking water on health, education, environment, gender, etc., and emphasizes the importance of providing good quality and safe service.
In this regard, Mauro Gutiérrez, executive president of Sunass, said that this publication was born after a review of recorded information on drinking water and its impact on different levels of life. “This is a document that Sunass is very proud of because it contains relevant information. I invite you to download the book and share the information,” he pointed out.
Among other data, the book explains that it reduces cases of diarrhea among children who use drinking water by 2.6 percent and among those who use sewage by 3.7 percent, and helps prevent typhoid, cholera and other stomach diseases.
In this sense, Ricardo Cuenca stressed that due to the importance of water in the life of Peruvian families, it is necessary to spread this type of content, making it popular and large-scale. “This article is basic educational material, since it can be included in daily school or university assignments,” he pointed out.
On the other hand, Marilou Martens said that having sanitation services is a basic right and the book helps to understand why good water use is central to people’s lives. “Importantly, it shows us the importance of good use and how it improves people’s lives.”
The book is available in digital format and can be downloaded via the following link: https://www.gob.pe/institucion/sunass/informes-publicaciones/4983613-el-buen-dato-sunass-volumen-2
