The Mayor’s Youth Empowerment and Training Program aims to provide educational opportunities for young people.
To address the pressing issues of youth unemployment and lack of opportunities, Usakos Mayor Irene Simeon Kurz unveiled the Mayor’s Youth Empowerment and Training Program on 29 January.
The event provides a platform for the youth of Usakos to get involved and help them understand their career paths and life journeys.
The program is designed to provide a unique opportunity for young people completing Year 10, 11 or 12. It aims to create a pathway to success by providing young people with the opportunity to discover their interests, develop essential skills and effectively address critical unemployment issues.

During the meeting, Simien-Kurz highlighted current challenges facing young people, including unemployment and lack of adequate opportunities.
“Despite the efforts of the Government and the private sector, I acknowledge that opportunities remain inadequate and a targeted approach is needed to empower young people through vocational training,” she said.
In response to the chronic youth education and unemployment issues faced by Usakos, this multi-sectoral action plan has been launched with the goal of correcting these shortcomings.
“Gone are the days of recording names and waiting. Our approach is different. We engage with students, understand their needs and direct them to institutions where they can enroll. At the same time, we work with vocational institutions to raise funds and lay the foundation for future success in the labour market,” she explains.

The programme included visits to the Namibia Institute of Mines and Technology (NIMT) and Arnestmi College campuses. Participants toured the campuses and were briefed on the courses or workshops offered, ranging from carpentry and welding to office management and hotel management.
Simien-Kurz said the program aims to target at least 50 young people from Usakos and provide them with employment opportunities.
The courses offered by NIMT and Anestemi College include full-time courses, four-year courses, six-month special courses and three-month elective courses.
The mayor stressed the importance of providing Usakos’ young people with the necessary job preparation and leadership skills to successfully compete in the labor market.
Most importantly, she added, the initiative provides an alternative to challenges related to crime, substance abuse and unemployment.
