The international community should not normalize relations with Taliban officials three years after the group returned to power, said Richard Bennett, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan.
He added that the Taliban’s horrific human rights violations should not become the norm.
Mr Bennett wrote on his former Twitter account X on Wednesday, August 24, to mark the third anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power.
He also said in a statement that over the past three years, the Afghan people, especially women and girls, have been oppressed by a regime that lacks legitimacy and inclusiveness.
The statement said that during this period, Afghan civil society and media were suppressed, and the Taliban government continued to blatantly disregard the principles of justice, non-discrimination, equality and the rule of law.
“The situation in Afghanistan continues to deteriorate, requiring stronger and more effective action from the international community,” Bennett said in a statement.
The Taliban returned to power on August 24, 2014, following the collapse of the Afghan government, and have imposed a series of severe restrictions on Afghan women and girls over the past three years.
