An American journalist was arrested, charged and fined after declaring a bag of marijuana to customs officials at Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport. Roderick Hilbert Boone, 49, had just disembarked from a Delta Air Lines flight in Atlanta, Georgia, and was being screened when he was asked if he had anything to declare. He presented a plastic bag containing marijuana to customs officials, who took it and weighed it. According to authorities, the drugs weighed 22 grams, while Boone said he was pretty sure it was only 13 grams. Either weight would be considered illegal, as Belize has only legalized 10 grams or less of the drug. Boone was taken to the Ladyville Police Station and charged with importing a controlled substance. The journalist was arraigned in court today and fined $2,000, plus court costs, which he must pay by Wednesday or face a year in jail. During the court hearing, Boone told the judge that he was sure there were 13 grams of drugs in the bag, as he believed that was the legal limit in Belize. Not wanting to delay the matter any further, Boone pleaded guilty. He assured the court that he would pay the fine and told the judge that he would soon move to Belize as he had recently purchased a property in Hopkins Village, Stann Creek District. After today’s court session, Boone headed south to vacation with his wife.
