August 31, 2024 (Washington) – The United States will impose visa restrictions on individuals who hinder the delivery of humanitarian aid to South Sudan, the State Department said on Friday.

In a statement, the United States expressed concern about the imposition of taxes on aid delivered to those in need.

Visa restrictions will prevent those involved in the case from entering the country.

South Sudan is currently experiencing one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises due to ongoing conflict and the impacts of climate change.

South Sudanese authorities have detained fuel tankers over a tax dispute, according to the United Nations, which says this is hampering the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need.

“Despite assurances, the government has yet to effectively reduce the excessive costs, bureaucratic obstacles, and risks of delivering humanitarian assistance to the South Sudanese people in need,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.

He added: “This raises questions about its willingness and ability to deliver on its 2018 peace agreement commitments to create an enabling environment for the delivery of humanitarian assistance and protection.”
