15 August 2024 (Geneva) – US Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perillo on Thursday welcomed Sudan’s Sovereign Council’s decision to open the Adre border crossing, calling it a “critical step” in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.
“This is an important step to save lives and prevent the spread of famine,” Perillo said in a statement following a meeting of international delegations in Geneva. “We look forward to seeing emergency convoys crossing the border in the coming days.”
The opening of the Adre crossing on the border with Chad will allow much-needed food, medicine and other supplies to be delivered to the conflict-affected Darfur region.
Perillo also called on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to ensure the safety and operational independence of aid groups passing through the crossing points. “We must all take immediate steps to ensure the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need in Darfur and across Sudan,” he said.
The U.S. envoy stressed that expanding humanitarian assistance is a top priority for the international community. He also noted that promoting humanitarian access and civilian protection is in line with the commitments made by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Security Forces under the Jeddah Declaration and international humanitarian law.
“We urge all parties to the conflict to honour these commitments so that aid reaches those who need it most,” Perillo concluded.
The opening of the Adre crossing is a positive development in the ongoing efforts to resolve Sudan’s humanitarian crisis. However, UN agencies say they need more funding to ensure that all those in need receive the assistance they need.
