Mark Chavez, 54, intends to plead guilty to illegally helping to supply the actor who played Chandler on the cult series with ketamine, a drug that led to his overdose. His death in a Jacuzzi in October 2023 shocked “Friends” fans and sparked an outpouring of mourning in Hollywood.

Another doctor, Salvador Plasencia, is accused of buying ketamine from Chavez and reselling it to Matthew Perry at a higher price. Jasveen Sangha, nicknamed the “Ketamine Queen,” is accused of giving the actor the dose that led to his death.

Their trial is scheduled for OctoberMark Chavez is expected to plead guilty to avoid trial, as are two other doctors who are the subjects of the investigation, which has revealed the toxic relationships between certain Hollywood celebrities and the doctors who were responsible for managing their addictions.

“Unscrupulous” doctor

Ketamine is sometimes abused for stimulant or euphoric purposes, and the actor took it under supervision as part of his depression treatment. But when his request to increase his dosage was rejected, the actor fell back into addiction in the fall of 2023 and turned to less careful dealers and doctors, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

An official from the U.S. drug enforcement agency called Salvador Plasencia and Marc Chavez “unscrupulous” doctors who had “violated the Hippocratic Oath.”

Friends was a true cultural phenomenon that aired between 1994 and 2004, following the adventures of a group of happy friends in New York and leaving its mark on an entire generation of viewers. But behind the scenes, Matthew Perry had long known there was a malaise hidden behind his cheerful Chandler character. He had long battled drug and alcohol addiction.
