August 11, 2024 (Juba) – The U.S. government announced an additional $95 million in humanitarian assistance to the people of South Sudan.
The new donation was announced by U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan Michael J. Adler and Kate Crawford, Chief of Mission for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
According to a statement obtained by Sudan Tribune, the funds will provide life-saving support to humanitarian partners, including the World Food Programme (WFP), to continue providing critical food and nutrition assistance to more than 700,000 people in the most food insecure areas of the country.
The additional funds will reportedly bring the U.S. government’s total humanitarian assistance to South Sudan in 2024 to more than $508 million.
This assistance comes at a critical time when more than 7 million people in South Sudan are facing repeated severe food insecurity.
In addition, nearly 780,000 people have fled from Sudan to South Sudan since the conflict escalated in April 2023.
These people often arrive in South Sudan food insecure, malnourished and without any possessions.
In addition, flooding across South Sudan is likely to affect an estimated 3.3 million people in the coming months.
“In the face of these challenges and increasing pressure on the humanitarian system, we continue to urge the Transitional Government to contribute more financial resources to humanitarian assistance and to reduce the costs and risks faced by donors and their implementing partners in helping the people of South Sudan,” the statement concluded.
