Montevideo, Uruguay | EUruguay national team player Juan Izquierdo is in intensive care after suffering a heart attack during a match against Brazil’s Sao Paulo and his health has deteriorated in the past few hours, according to a medical bulletin published on Sunday.
The team treating him at Israel Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo reported that the 27-year-old had “progressive brain involvement and increased intracranial pressure.”
The medical report released states that “the patient, Juan Manuel Izquierdo, has been hospitalized since August 22, 2024, at 8:55 pm, and underwent new examinations this Sunday (25th). Evaluations showed a progression of brain involvement and an increase in intracranial pressure.” Published by the national club on its social networks.
“Juan remains in the neuro-intensive care unit and is on mechanical ventilation,” he added.
The football player was admitted to hospital “due to unexplained cardiac arrest secondary to arrhythmia,” the attending doctor said on Saturday.
Izquierdo collapsed on the pitch at the Morumbi Stadium in the 84th minute of their Copa Libertadores last-16 second-leg tie with Sao Paulo. The player, who replaced Sebastian Coates after the break, was quickly taken to hospital by ambulance.
The match ended with a 2-0 win for Sao Paulo and Nacional was eliminated from the continental championship, but the entire stadium was stunned by what had happened.

The president of the club, Alejandro Balbi, who has returned to Montevideo, returned this Sunday to São Paulo to be with Izquierdo’s family. The footballer’s wife, Selena, gave birth to the couple’s second child a week ago, and their two-year-old daughter and the player’s parents are already in São Paulo.
Izquierdo was born in Montevideo on July 4, 1997. He signed with Nacional on January 24, with a contract until December 31, 2025. According to Transfermarkt, his market value in June was 1 million euros.
He began his professional career at Montevideo Cerro Montevideo in 2017 and has played for other Uruguayan first division clubs such as Peñarol, Rangers and Liverpool, as well as Atlético San Luis in Mexico.
