July 26, 2024 (Cairo) – Dr. Elshafie Khidir Saeed, President of Sudanese think tank Fikra Center for Research and Development, in a letter to Filippo Grandi of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), expressed alarm over the deteriorating situation of Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia’s Amhara region.
Said said that more than 6,080 Sudanese refugees displaced by the conflict who have sought asylum in Ethiopia are facing dire conditions in temporary settlements in the Olara region. Many of these refugees are women and children, which makes their plight more urgent.
Reports of violence, including a recent attack that left a refugee couple dead, have heightened their trauma and insecurity. Their vulnerability is further exacerbated by a lack of basic necessities such as food, water and healthcare.
Saied called on UNHCR to take immediate action to respond to the crisis. In particular, he called for enhanced security measures to prevent further violence, resettlement programmes to ensure the safety and dignity of refugees, and renewed efforts to provide basic necessities. He also stressed the importance of empowering refugees and treating them with respect.
The appeal acknowledges the challenges UNHCR faces but underlines the urgency of the situation. Saied called for swift and decisive action, urging UNHCR to work with stakeholders to find sustainable solutions for Sudanese refugees in Amhara and beyond.
He reminded High Commissioner Grandi that his leadership represented the conscience of humanity and implored him to prioritize the safety, security and dignity of those who were suffering.
The letter ends with a call for UNHCR to take concrete measures to alleviate the suffering of Sudanese refugees, reflecting growing concerns about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region and the urgent need for the international community to take action.
UNHCR’s response to this urgent appeal is awaited with great anticipation as it will set the tone for international efforts to address the dire situation of Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia.
