The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) last week reviewed multiple complaints about satellite interference in recent months from Ukraine and four European countries: France, the Netherlands, Sweden and Luxembourg.
In these incidents, GPS signals were jammed, air traffic control was compromised and children’s television channels were interrupted by broadcasting violent scenes from the war in Ukraine.
The ITU Radio Regulations Board expressed “serious concern” about the “intentional” interference signals, calling it “extremely worrying and unacceptable.”
The statement said the interference with French and Swedish satellite networks “appeared to have come from ground stations located in the Moscow, Kaliningrad and Pavlovka regions.”
The committee called on Russia to immediately stop such actions and investigate the incident. He also called on the affected countries to hold a meeting with Russia to resolve the crisis and prevent it from happening again.
Russia’s diplomatic mission in Geneva did not respond to a request for comment.
Moscow denies violating ITU rules and has complained about interference with its satellites by NATO members, but the ITU did not address the issue at a meeting last week for unclear reasons.
The ITU, which has 193 member states and is based in Geneva, oversees and coordinates global satellite systems.
