The United Nations Human Rights Commission released a preliminary report on the current situation.
As of August 4, approximately 400 victims had died. On August 5-6, approximately 250 more people were reportedly killed.
Speaking at the release of the report on Friday (August 16), UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk said Bangladesh’s transformation provides a historic opportunity to build an inclusive governance system based on human rights and the rule of law.
“Holding accountability for (human rights) violations and ensuring justice for victims is key. Initiatives should be taken at the national level to overcome this situation,” he said, adding.
As a first step in this process, Volker Turk mentioned a transparent, impartial and extensive investigation.
A report by the United Nations Human Rights Commission stressed that hundreds of people have been killed in student protests since mid-June, including at least 32 children.
The report also describes human rights issues such as excessive use of force, arrests and torture.
The Commission also made several recommendations to the political parties, the interim government and the international community.
