The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, on Friday (August 9), called on the Venezuelan authorities to release all those arbitrarily detained in the country.
Liz Troxell, a spokeswoman for the high commissioner’s office, said her team was closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela.
“He is following events in Venezuela closely and is concerned about the arbitrary detention since late July of peaceful protesters, including young people and children, journalists, members of political parties, human rights defenders and others perceived as dissidents,” he said.
Troxell also stressed the importance of protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens, including the right to peaceful protest and free expression. “Everyone has the right to protest peacefully and to express their opinions freely and without fear,” he stressed.
