The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, said on Tuesday he was “extremely concerned” about the unrest in Venezuela following the re-election of Nicolás Maduro in Sunday’s presidential election, which the opposition claimed victory.
“I am extremely concerned about the growing tensions in Venezuela,” Turk said in a statement.
“Venezuela is at a crossroads. I urge the authorities to respect the rights of all Venezuelans to assemble, protest peacefully, and express their opinions freely and without fear,” he added.
