2nd August 2024 (GOLO) – The Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) said a United Nations delegation arrived in Sudan’s Jebel Marra region on Friday to assess the humanitarian situation of thousands of people displaced by the ongoing conflict in Darfur.
The area, which is under the control of the Sudan Liberation Movement’s Wahid faction, has seen a large number of people displaced from their homes to escape conflict in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state.
Toby Harward, the United Nations deputy humanitarian coordinator in Sudan, recently visited the region to meet with leaders of the Sudan Liberation Movement-Abd al-Wahid faction and inspect the conditions of thousands of people displaced by the fighting.
The El Fasher conflict has displaced at least 143,000 civilians, many of whom have sought shelter in Jebel Marra, according to the United Nations. The Sudan Liberation Movement-Abdul Wahid faction, which has been fighting the central government since 2003, expanded its control over the area last year to protect those fleeing the violence.
Civilian authorities in the SLM-AW-controlled area said they had received the UN mission and provided them with a humanitarian report detailing the dire situation in the region, where millions of people are displaced and living in camps and shelters.
The delegation, comprising UN agency coordinator and UNHCR representative Mohammed Kanu, visited shelters in Golo and met with displaced people from across Sudan.
Civil authorities called for urgent action, with a spokesman saying the situation “exceeds famine levels”.
The Darfur region, which is largely controlled by the Rapid Support Forces, is facing severe food shortages and potential famine due to a lack of humanitarian aid.
Aid groups, including UN agencies, have expressed concern about restrictions imposed by all parties to the conflict and a lack of safe aid access as large swathes of the region face the risk of severe food shortages and famine.
